  3. Lotus, family Leguminosae, including the
  4. bird's foot trefoil Lotus corniculatus; the
  5. shrub Zizyphus lotus, known to the ancient
  6. Greeks who used its fruit to make a type of
  7. bread and also a wine supposed to induce
  8. happy oblivion - hence lotus-eaters; the
  9. water-lily Nymphaea lotus, frequent in
  10. Egyptian art; and Nelumbium nuciferum, the
  11. sacred lotus of the Hindus, which floats, its
  12. flowerhead erect above the water.

  16. (1928-1982), who built his first racing car
  17. 1948, and also developed high-powered
  18. production saloons and sports cars, such as
  19. the Lotus-Cortina and Lotus Elan. Lotus has
  20. been one of the leading Grand Prix
  21. manufacturers since its first Grand Prix in
  22. 1960. Jim Clark, twice world champion, had
  23. all his Grand Prix wins in a Lotus. The last
  24. Lotus world champion was Mario Andretti 1978.
