Several different plants: those of the genus
Lotus, family Leguminosae, including the
bird's foot trefoil Lotus corniculatus; the
shrub Zizyphus lotus, known to the ancient
Greeks who used its fruit to make a type of
bread and also a wine supposed to induce
happy oblivion - hence lotus-eaters; the
water-lily Nymphaea lotus, frequent in
Egyptian art; and Nelumbium nuciferum, the
sacred lotus of the Hindus, which floats, its
flowerhead erect above the water.

Motorcar company founded by Colin Chapman
(1928-1982), who built his first racing car
1948, and also developed high-powered
production saloons and sports cars, such as
the Lotus-Cortina and Lotus Elan. Lotus has
been one of the leading Grand Prix
manufacturers since its first Grand Prix in
1960. Jim Clark, twice world champion, had
all his Grand Prix wins in a Lotus. The last
Lotus world champion was Mario Andretti 1978.
